Did I mess up choosing 3.73’s? I thought it a good compromise between 3.42 and 4.10.
Is your combined less than 29K??????? If yes you did! Is your combined more than 29K ?????? If yes you did!
I have towed HEAVY with both 3.42's and 4.10's. The 3.42 performed great towing a combined 29K with my 11 HO RAM Dually. The exception was taking off on a grade. I towed in 5th at 60 doing about 1,750rpm. I can tell you from personal experience the 3.42's with AISIN in my son's 3500SRW towing a combined around 28-29K with a very overloaded dump trailer took off without effort on a sizable grades. LOOK at the chart I provided! Those are SAE numbers, third line up shows the 3.42's. Towing at 1,750 at 60 is perfect for the Cummins.
I tow the same rpm now with the 4.10's towing 33-35K.
Honestly to do it over again I may just get the 3.42's next time even at these weights. The savings running solo will add up!
Don't COMPROMISE!!!
My CURRENT combined weight is about 24,000 pounds but the whole idea is to eventually move up to a heavier trailer that will put me at about 28,500. So you’re saying at 28,500 I should stay at 3.42?
