I know this has been a spirited conversation about 6 speeds. How do your opinions change if I’m running a 48RE? Back in 06’, automatics all came with 3:73 and sticks came with 4:10.
Back in the 47/48RE days it was a general feeling that 4.10 were best for towing. Just missing a cruising gear. I towed for 14 years with 4.10's and a 47RE. Would not have traded for taller gears.
Back in '06 the Cummins put out 185 HP at 1600 rpm. The HP climbed to a peak of 325 at 2900 rpm. Keeping the rpm high was necessary to utilize the engines power. The HO Cummins of today puts out 301 HP at 1700 rpm and it climbs to 385 at 2800 rpm. It is likely putting out 325 HP by the time it reaches 1900 rpm. The engine doesn't need to rev the way it use to to make power. And keep in mind that pulling a 17000 lb rv down the highway at 70 mph only takes about 120-130 hp on level ground.
