Get the half ton and then come on here asking about Timbrens, Overloads, LT tires, and other modifications to make the tow vehicle acceptable. Or, purchase a heavier duty pickup the first time. Rent or borrow the various classifications to appreciate the difference.
First off, I agree that it is better to have a higher rated truck and that the trailer the OP is looking at should probably be pulled by a 3/4 ton or larger, however....
Sometimes it is far less expensive to add a few upgrades to a lighter duty truck to make towing at or under the limit a better experience.
I'm AT the payload limit for my 1/2 ton, I do not exceed it. I also do not exceed the rear axle rating (thank you WDH!) and am far under the maximum tow rating (useless rating!) at 6006 lbs fully loaded. My truck is rated for 9500 lbs ????? for some reason.
I added a leaf to help reduce the sag on the rear end. The WDH does a great job, but the extra leaf very much reduces bounce between the truck and trailer. My extra leaf costs a lot less then upgrading to a 3/4 ton truck.
