We purchased an Outback 298RE a month ago. Funny because we seriously considered the 301 and that is the one we actually went to see at the dealer. After describing what we were looking for, the dealer led us to the 298RE, which was REALLY what we were looking for. We don't have kids at home any more, but we've had bunkhouse style campers always. I wanted the bunks for storage, storage, storage!
Well ... we ended up getting the 298RE and it really was the best for us. But we did get to look at the 301 on the lot and after seeing the 298, there was no comparison.
Looking at the floor plans between the two, looks like the bunks and master bed are opposite each other, but the Forest River does not have a slide in the Master bed room.
One thing to consider, the Master Bed on the front of the trailer, if you spend much time in bed, the curved (front) of the camper, which is the headboard of the bed, is very uncomfortable leaning back on. The Outback master bed (Head) is on a flat surface.
I strongly suggest you physically go see both campers and spend some time with them. Try sitting and laying on the bed, actually sit on the toilet (don't use it)... you'll discover that most men don't have enough leg room (men, you know what I mean). And try laying on the bunks yourself. If you are not comfortable, the kids will not be comfortable either.
I personally like the Outback floor plan better. You've got more space with the extra slide for the bedroom.
But to answer your original question, actually, both are good campers, and you'll have no problems (at best, minimal issues) that will be discovered within the first week you have it.
I do know if you go with the Outback you'll be getting a pretty good trailer. But Forest River ain't shabby either!
