I started always carrying a spare fuel filter and the necessary tools to change it. I always change this filter at 10,000 miles regardless of what the computer tells me, but still carry a spare. I had and have heard the water in the fuel problem for years and with over 400,000 total diesel miles driven to date (2 vehicles) I have NEVER seen the first drop of water, but I still have the spare filter just in case.
