I have seen several posts indicating that the poster would rather have an older model diesel, prior to all the emission control devices, but it seems every year we see improvements in tow ratings and fuel consumption. So, if the new trucks get better mpg and have higher tow capacity, what are the benefits of looking for used vs. new?
Back in the late 60's early 70's it was believed that new cars were full of problems due to smog equipment - and they were problematic.
That was a transition period - the smog equipment became refined over time and improved to a point that it was trouble free.
Currently, diesel engines are finishing that experimental/refinement period - so there is still a lot of that "old school" opinion on new diesel trucks.
As the technology improves with time, so does the truck.
That said, many of the problems with diesels from the last 10 years have been identified and there are aftermarket kits that fix those problems.
If shopping used, you might find one with all the upgrades and if the price is right - then get it.
Buying new: the single big advantage is if you plan to buy new and hit the road - like full time!
If you can get full time use of the truck under warranty you'd pretty much be worry free.
If the new truck is NOT to be used for it's primary purpose then you'd be wasting a lot of warranty.
Warranty is like an insurance policy - you pay for it in terms of depreciation.
