All of the 2011 up Dmaxes use a pressure differential sensor system. It monitors the restriction in the fuel filter and calculates how much life is left by how fast the restriction is building up. At any fuel fill up a bad load of fuel will cause the restriction to sky rocket, and the truck will shut down, or limp, along with a DIC message. In such a case, the difference between having a new filter vs a used filter installed can be a few blocks. In short, replacing the fuel filter early is just a waste of money.
Note: GM recommends replacing it at 2 years regardless of the mileage.
