I would just follow the filter life monitor, but when it gets really cold in the winter I will get the change filter message because of poor fuel flow due to slight jelling of the fuel in the filter. It happened a couple of times last year when we were in the -20F range for a couple of weeks. You have to reset the monitor to clear the message, so it's no longer accurate.
This results from use of B20 diesel which is best avoided altogether. Even worse is switching back and forth between B20 and other diesel fuels. And problems that result are not covered by the GM warranty.
Oil changes depend on the type of use. Lots of short trips and more soot buildup. Towing will burn more fuel and there will be faster degradation of the additives which comprise 25% of a gallon of oil.
DEF consumption is also a percentage of fuel consumption so with a heavy load my Duramax consumes about a gallon every 750 miles. With no load it is around 1000 miles per gallon of DEF. Always buy DEF at the pump as it is cheaper and fresher and I can fill the tank completely.
