2005 isn't 1975,gawd they were bad then. Most engines now a days are pretty well tuned. But in your case you'll need a program with more high rpm emphasis and it's worse mileage. Face it, you really want a diesel.
2005 isn't 1975 but a lot has changed since 2005. My GMC has the same engine as the new 2017 but computer technology has given it a gain in both HP and Torque.
2005 GMC Sierra 1500 RWD 5.3l
HP: 295
Torque: 335 ft. lbs.
2017 GMC Sierra 1500 RWD 5.3l
HP: 355
Torque: 383 ft. lbs.
That's a gain of 60 HP and 48 pounds of torque. With my exhaust and intake mods I did a year ago I hope to see numbers like that or better. The 2017 is also about 1000 pounds heavier.
I really don't want a diesel. They're expensive to repair and I know nothing about working on them. I have a 32' sailboat on the coast that takes care of any excesses I have in my bank account. I can work on my V8 plus people have been pulling TT's much heavier than mine for years without diesels. My dad pulled an 18' TT through the mountains in Colorado with a brand new 1970 Monte Carlo with a 350ci and 3 speed auto transmission.
Thanks for the comment.
