I towed for years with a 2005 4x2 Avalanche and had a heck of a time on several occasions dragging our 4800 lb trailer on & off campsites, on one occasion at 4 Mile Creek SP in NY had to have a friend with a 4x4 Expedition pull it off the site for me. :M Having previously towed with an '06 4x4 Silverado I switched back earlier this year to a 2012 4x4 Silverado and would never go back to 4x2. Yes, I do live in Canada but that has nothing to do with it - whether heavy rain, snow, sand, wet grass, mucky ground, etc, 4x4 will get you out when 4x2 won't. In dry weather I normally run my Silvy in 4x2 but if it's raining heavily or the roads are lightly covered with intermittent sections of snow I'll switch to Auto 4x4 and let the truck figure it out - works great. :B
