It always amuses me to hear all the people who say two wheel drive and some weight and good tires is at all comparable to four wheel drive.
It isn’t.
Yeah. But that just comes from a less broad experience level. After all, it is not the majority of folks who live rural in some rather tough places to drive in. I grew up on the family farm in Central Iowa and we had 2WD pickups back in the day. But I also remember that it was a frequent occurrence to have to go get the tractor to pull them out of stuff. I lived in the Interior of Alaska for 10 years and 2WD was not the most ideal of vehicles to use year round. Lived in Colorado front range for about 12 years, and same deal. i currently live on the farm I grew up on. When I first moved back, I had a 2WD 3/4 ton. That got traded in real quick after the first winter and spring here for a 4WD version. That will be the status quo for as long as I am here.
The original argument was regarding initial cost of 4WD over 2WD. That is true. But the residual on the back end is comparable, so it is essentially a moot point. It is true, that many really don't "need" 4WD since they are urban folks who just commute to work each day on fairly nice highways and occasionally tow a trailer or go fishing. And some, I think, just have a ball hitch on the receiver as some sort of status symbol as opposed to actually using it on a regular basis. I tow and haul quite a bit for my needs around home, on top of any recreational pursuits. But I yank the ball mount out of the hitch when I am not using it and throw it in the tool box. To me, it just seems stupid to have that darn thing hanging out the back end waiting to bruise someone's shin. To others, it is a right of passage to manhood that must be displayed.
But it is their money to do with as they wish. I have a pretty solid view of such things, when someone else is paying the bills, then they have standing to say what should be. Not until the time comes that I am asked to ante up for someone else's toys will I go out of my way to say they are stupid. I may shake my head and wonder why folks do what they do and spend what they spend, but it is not my place to do more than that.
