New mattress tips?

We are looking to buy a new mattress. We tried a topper but didn't like it.
We have room for a standard queensize mattress.

Anything specific to consider for a mattress in a truck camper?

Height definitely so we don't block anything from opening around the mattress, but anything else: weight, so we don't put a heavy Tempurpedic in there?

How about type: spring, memory foam, ... Any reasons why some types are better regarding use in a truck camper?

Additional question: what can we place underneath the mattress to provide good cold weather insulation?

Thanks!

Jorn

    Memory foam is garbage.

Now we get to compare who just sleeps in their camper and who also has sex. LOL!
  • I've found that sometimes an el cheapo inner spring mattress with a foam topper (just enough so you don't feel the springs) seems to do a good job.

I have also been looking at the Froli springs that give support, but allow for air to circulate underneath. Coupled with some Reflectix insulation, that will provide useful insulation as well as prevent moisture problems.
  • Memory foam is garbage.

I need a firm bed which is what I originally got when I bought this $2300 (retail, but they dropped the price to $1000) 10" name brand memory foam mattress from the local mattress chain. We're talking broken-femur-if-you-jump-on-the-bed firm.

After 4 months it started getting soft.

After 6 months it was COMPLETE MUSH, top to bottom left to right. Instead of supporting, it "conformed" to my body, sinking further where I was heavier, wrecking my back.

Dragged myself back to the mattress store to complain. They suckered me into buying a "firm" coil spring mattress to the tune of another $500, marked down from $750. In my defense I was desperate and in severe pain. Felt okay for a few days, then my back started hurting again, a little more each morning. I knew what was coming.

They won't take the coil spring mattress back. No refunds, even though the salesman said they'd make an exception because that was the firmest mattress they had, and if that didn't work they had nothing else I could use.

Now I'm out over $1500 and I have no place to sleep. I've been sleeping on the overturned memory foam mattress because it was still hard on the bottom, but that's quickly turning to mush as well.

There's nothing left but memory foam out there. Nobody sells inner spring mattresses, let alone extra-firm, anymore because it's not "in." Memory foam is GARBAGE. It will get soft and mushy after 6 months. It will fail on you. It will leave you waking up in blinding pain at 4 in the morning.
  • We have a memory foam mattress. Absolutely love it,very comfortable. We happened to see it in Walmart while walking down an aisle and it had a red tag with several reduced prices crossed out down to what we saw and it was cheap and it is great.
Open it after you have it up on the overhead.

we bought Pacbed Original mattress comes in 9", we added 2" for more firmness (11" deep) and added the gel for coolness. We bought it at the suggestion of people on this forum!
It comes shipped in a box. Take out the old mattress, put the box on the frame. Open the box, carefully cut the shrink wrap and voila! instant mattress. Good guarantee. We got ours when they were having a sale. Extremely happy with this mattress!!
  • We picked up a foam mattress at Ikea. It is lighter and more comfortable than the spring mattress that came with our TC.
  • We took regular standard spring mattress out of spare bedroom and put it in TC. That was the idea to go smaller because the queen didn't give us much room on the sides to make up bed or store stuff. We were putting queen in spare bedroom anyway. We also put foam egg crate between mattress and cab over for insulation. It must work pretty good cause we sleep better in camper than house, most of the time.
