Really appreciate the responses. Decided not to worry about the genset and buy a Hyundai HY2000si for those trips down to NoCal and points East.
Now my biggest concerns are COG and center of mass, and I hoping to take care of that issue with a front hitch-mounted rack.
I have not gotten up on the roof yet, but during my trial I intend to do a thorough inspection and shake-down.
Pics to follow.

Couple hundred pounds hangin off the front won't do squat for cantilevering weight off the rear axle. Won't hurt and is a convienent way to haul some gear but that's it. IGet over that madness that most of the weight ninnies spread on this forum right now, or don't buy a TC.
After every practical mod, measurement , weight ticket etc the fact of the matter will be that it's a camper that's mass is roughly centered over the rear axle and the rear end will be carrying the vast majority of the weight. Period. Either you're comfortable with it or you're not.
But I love TCs and you may too!
Your biggest concerns provided both units check out structurally should be the mechanical fitness of an20 year old pickup that has sat in a barn half its life after high miles put on it. Seals, pumps, brakes, injection pump, fuel contamination etc.
