My 2012 BMW X5 has the same sort of keyless system. I've tested it, and found that the key needs to be within about 5 feet of the car and anybody's hand in the door handle will unlock it. Move the key more than 5 feet away, however, and it stays locked.
That said, it recently started acting up, in that one of the two keys would not consistently unlock the car, and every once in a while, while driving down the road, the car would alert me that the key (though in my pocket) was not present and the car would refuse to start when shut down. I also noticed that sometimes the driver's side door handle would feel warm, and the trusty IR thermometer showed it to sometimes be 20-30 degrees warmer than surrounding metal. The dealer determined that the door handle sensor was going bad and replaced it under warranty. Problem solved.
I would suggest that the OP test to see how far away the fob has to be. Perhaps his security can be improved by placing the fob at the camper back door.
