Good question, don't read a lot about it.
Personally my preference would be the leaf spring setup aka 3500. Not because it's a "1 ton" but because it's simpler, proven and more options for load bearing accessories.
I've seen HD coils and air bags offered for the 2500 coil trucks and it wouldn't stop me from putting a camper on one if I had that truck.
