The first thing is to inspect the brakes, bearings and suspension. Knowing that it is roadworthy is more important than the pretty stuff. You mentioned bearing buddies, I hope not because they keep a constant pressure on the grease eventually pushing it into the brakes. More likely you simply have a grease fitting on the end of the axle, and that too can cause grease to be pushed past the inner seal. I suggest that you hand pack bearings and never use those gimmicks.
