Hi everyone. While I am not new to camping I am new to the whole RV style of camping.
My name is Jason. My wife and I are in the market looking to purchase a new (not used) tow behind travel trailer but we have many questions that I am hoping to get some answers too.
You might re-think this. Purchase pre owned for the first one so you will know what you want in the second trailer. You never know until you get into a trailer, then you find out what you really want in the next trailer. Depreciation is about 50 percent over five years so it is a very steep learning curve for a first timer with a new trailer.
I drive a 2013 Toyota Tundra with a towing cap of 10,000 pounds. my truck is equipped with a towing package and is all set to go, as far as I know.
What is set to go? You are payload limited severly with your truck. A 30 foot travel trailer will have a tongue weight of at least 800 pounds and perhaps depending on model 1000 pounds plus the weight of the hitch at another 75-100 pounds. That is a considerable amount of weight reduction from the payload of the truck and that payload has to accommodate all the people, bikes, kayaks, dogs, tools, bbq, chairs, generator, etc. You probably are not really 'set to go' for a 30 foot trailer.
In an effort to gain as much knowledge as I can before I jump in and make some mistakes I have the following questions.
We are looking at a trailer that is about 30 feet long, no longer than 32. Weight should be about 5-7K pounds empty. From what I have learned so far I would be right to think I need a brake controller
and some sort of weight distribution system?
Always use Gross Weight, never dry weights or brochure weights.
What is a ballpark area for me to think is fair for insurance?
It depends. Mine is insured for under $50 a year for full coverage.
How much negotiation room are there with dealers? I hate to haggle but will if there are deals to be found!
Try for 30 percent.
Is it worth it to purchase an extended warranty when I buy the trailer?
I do not think so; it is more profit for the dealer as is the starter kit that costs you several hundred dollars. Avoid both if you can.
I am sure to have more questions but for right now that is all I can think of. I am eagerly looking forward to hearing from everyone!
Thank you,
Jason
