New tow rig. GM 10 speed

Not a long term review, obviously, but just got a new company truck. 5.3L Chevy 1500 with the 10speed auto.

This slushbox appears to work seamlessly, it's intuitive on up and downshifts. Shifting a very crisp, but at the same time almost imperceptible unless your staring at the tach or hear the engine rpms change.

For the more gears ain't better crowd, I beg to differ. It's a big step up from the 6 speed in the 2016 Silverado I had.

Looking forward to seeing how well it tows.
  • Very nice! Be curious to hear what type of fuel economy it gets and how it compares to the 2016 you had.
  • It feels a little stouter than the 16 but it’s about the same truck power wise.
Mileage is 14s right now, new. Old truck averaged 15s not towing.
Maybe some breakin going on, but it’s got bigger tires and I can hear them, mud tires. The tires are worth -1mpg. Lol.
Forgot how good Duratracs are though. They slice through rain and snow

They only put the ten speed with the 5.3 in the trailboss. Everything else gets the 8 speed unless you get the 6.2. Very nice truck there.

    Thanks!
I expected it to have the 8 speed, so that was a pleasant surprise, although the 8 speed one I had for a couple months, previously, was a similar step up from the 6.
Fun fact, the LT Trailboss models get the 10 speed, but the Custom Trailboss models (low optioned) get the old 6 speed behind the 5.3 or 4.3 motors.

Your RST is a 6.2, correct? Love those truck too.

My RST is a 8 speed 5.3. Its a little rocket. Don't think I would want the 6.2

And you got a two inch lift, pushing a bit more air than your '16.
  • ^Yup. It all adds up.
Gets as good or better than our new (2016) diesel though! 6” lift and 37s on stock gearing is good for about -4mpg it seems! Lol
  • My 2019 RST 5.3 8speed gets a solid 21-22 on the highway and around 15-16 around town. So I'd bet the small lift with the little bit bigger tires drops it a tad. I was thinking about getting the trailboss later this year for the ten speed but I may hold off.

I recall seeing 18mpg highway in the 2019 5.3 8 speed I drove for a while. Was in the mountains of southern BC and not driving terribly fast.
Generally my mileage is on the low end of most claims. I drive like gas and tires are free most of the time!

I'll try doing the speed limit on the way to work one of these days and report back!
  • I just traded a Chevy Colorado ZR2 extra cab with the 3.6L. Most Colorado 4X4's with the Z71 package get highway mpg in the mid 20's. Anything over 70 mph and I was around 16-17 and only marginally better when driving slower, but speed was not its friend. The ZR2 has a 2" lift and the same GY Duratrac tires and a front end fascia that is not aerodynamic. Not a direct comparison to the Trail Boss but you get the idea. The lift and the tires take power to overcome. Worth it to me personally, but it comes at price.
  • I drove my RST 5.3 from Az to Wisconsin and back at least 5 mph over the speed limit the whole time and averaged 22 mpg hand calculated. Better than I expected and that was with an engine and transmission in the back of the truck for the ride home. Been really happy with my 5.3 but I want the ten speed

Eastbound usually helps, IMO. Generally bucking prevailing winds headed west and vice versa headed east, but that is impressive mileage.

It's nice, but honestly I can't tell much difference in daily driving between it and the 8 speed. Both are a big improvement over the 6 speed if they prove to be durable.
My avg is up into the 15s now, little over 1000miles on it.
