New trailer

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct area or not. I received a camper that isn't in too bad of shape inside and out. The problem is mechanically which isn't that bad either I guess, or depends on the person. The trailer is a 97 Jayco Eagle 262fk...if I remember correctly. So far I've discovered the water heater tank itself ruptured, the main plug outside is melted out, and worst of all the black water tank is frozen FULL!

1) Can anybody point me in the right direction on where I can buy a new heater tank? And are those hard to replace? Looks like it could be a pain judging by where it's located.

2) Is there a way to get the black water tank cleared out? If it were my mess I'd be more inclined to deal with it myself. Would an Rv shop be able to do something about it? If not I'll deal with it. I'm just hoping no pipes were busted by freezing. I don't want it to thaw and make a huge nasty mess.

Sorry if this is kind of all over the place, I'm new to forums and posting. Rv'ing too! But looking forward to it if I can get this rig straightened out. It was free so I'm not complaining.

  • if you have stool in the black tank you can use rid x or go to a rv store and buy some digester and put it in the tank with more water to let the additives work. wait several days, a week or more if possible. you need lots of time for the additive to work, it will liquify the stool and it will come out on it's own
  • Thanks for all the replies. I've got a new plug, somebody told me you can cut the old off and wire the new one on. I'll have to call a few places about the tank. One of these days I'll crawl underneath and check out the black tank also. See if I can spot any damage. If not I'll block it off and throw a space heater under there. Hopefully start thawing it out faster.
  • I would be concerned about the wiring. If the receptacle is burned out but the wiring behind it is sound that is good.

Unless the black tank is cracked, all an RV shop is going to do it move it indoors and wait for it to melt then dump it.

Some of the hot water heaters are not to hard to replace, you my get lucky.

It depends on how handy you are.
  • Hopefully, nothing is wrong with the black tank. You're best just to let nature and time thaw it out, then dump it. Once it thaws, you'll know if there is a leak or not. If the tank was not completely filled ... like up into the toilet bowl full, there may be enough air space, that the freezing expansion had somewhere to go. It pushed up instead of out, and (hopefully) did not damage the tank or drain pipes.

About your water heater. If it's ruptured, you're best to replace it. Check with any RV dealership, Camping World, or any place that stock RV parts, and you'll probably be able to find a replacement. Will it be easy? Probably not, if you just use your head, and think it through and disassemble only what is needed to reach the tank for a replacement. It's very do-able.
  • Any RV parts store can sell you a new water heater.
As for the black tank? Good luck! Poo piles are very hard to clean out. Connect it to your sewer clean out if you can, open the valve and using a broom handle down through the toilet and water try moving stuff around and flush it out. Keep at it until nothing it left in the tank. They do make a plastic wand that attaches to a garden hose that might help cleaning the black tank out.
