New Truck Camper Purchase

Ladies and Gents,

Here is the story:

2004 F350 6.0 Powerstroke SWR, FX4, Lariat, tow package E rated tires (new 3000 miles), truck camper package (rear anti sway bar) original equipment.
Rear GAWR 6380 Lbs, Front GAWR 5200 Lbs GVWR 9900 Lbs.

Mods: New Hellwig heavy duty shocks front and rear. Rear Air bags with 200 psi compressor, cab remote.

Truck Camper: 2016 Lance 1062. Wet weight 4061 Lbs. Extra garbage 250 Lbs.
My fat ass, wife and dog 400 Lbs Total 4750 to 5000 Lbs.
Length 10'11" 2 feet overhang. Plus weight of gun load ??? LOL.

Drove from place of purchase NH to NJ without a problem. No sway, speed averaged 65 mph. Have reached 75 until my wife started screaming.

Plans to tow: 25' boat trailer weighting about 5000 Lbs total with dual axles. Tongue weight ??? I can lift it alone all the way up until the out drive hits the
ground. So I figure 150 to 200 Lbs. 3' tow hitch extension to be able to carry the camper and tow the boat. Or have a Torklift super hitch weight distributing installed.
Also installing a class IV front hitch to carry a platform for possible garbage needed.

Your input, help, knowledge, criticism etc will be appreciated including any mods you think will be beneficial to install.

  • Congratulations on your new Lance.

    The 1062 is a nice camper, but it needs a dually.

    Your E rated tires are way over loaded.
  • Truck is overloaded but I doubt it will affect you because chances are your head gasket will fail before you get much farther in your 6.0. haha. Sorry couldn't resist. Get a dually and Cummins imo. Or run it, I've seen much more dangerous things. Carefully with your tires and pressures if you choose to use it.
  • I think you will find several issues here.
    -calculating only 250 lb of added stuff? Are you planning to drive with no water in the camper? In my case 1200lb come from "nowhere" with only 40 gal of fresh water and empty holding tanks.
    - trailers should put at least 10 percent of its weight on the tongue. Some advise 20. If you can lift tongue of 5000 lb trailer by hand, the stability will suffer.
    Add a stinger to the truck and that makes good recipe for disaster.
    Your and DW weight don't mean much as you'll be close to front axle.
    I say you have LOT of homework to do.

  • My max weight with a 2000 7.3 SRW was about 13,200 pounds. I had put 19.5 tires and wheels on it, a Firestone airbag system that I ran light, you have heavier overhang so would need to up that. It seemed to work, there is quite a few people that say their rigs perform just fine. Your camper is about 600 pounds heavier than mine was.

    Lot's of stuff seemed to break earlier than I expected.. it's not young.. 17 years old now. but I think I paid a price over and above what I should have if I obeyed the limitations as it said I should.

    You are really over the limit for your rig.. really well over the limit. The only consideration, which I gently realized, is getting the whole thing to stop in a reasonable limit. Coming downhill in first gear on a switchback highway hoping I could make the next turn did not feel very good.
