I've always gone with the 4600s since I'm always at stock height. The 5100s allow for a 2" lift. I looked around, but could find anything definitive on the differences between the two. Bilstein is pretty secretive about their internals. Makes me believe they're the same shock, just more length with the 5100s. Some people swear that one is softer than the other.
There is a big misconception out there that 5100s are strictly for lifted trucks which is NOT true. I have 5100s on my 2012 stock height duramax. THey are the same length as the stock shocks.
4600s and 5100s are just valved differently with the 5100s being a little softer. I had 4600s on my last 2500HD and 5100s on my current. For a daily driver I prefer the 5100s. 4600s are also very good but intended for heavy loads and as a result they do ride a bit stiffer unloaded. Its all personal preference.
