Hi,
I think that it is better to wait a while for the rings to 'wear in' before changing the oil. While it might sound counter productive, it is better to let the rings wear a little bit, then change the oil around 3,000 miles.
This will seat the rings, and lead to not burning oil.
My car has 67,000 miles on it, and does not drop even 1/2 quart between 10,000 mile oil changes. It is a Ford Edge, 2007 3.5L with 265 HP! And I try to use all 250 HP when getting on the freeway sometimes. Just because it is fun. . .
I agree that the first oil change, there should be a lot of loose metal dissolved into the oil, smaller particles that the oil filter can trap. But not bad enough to damage any of the bearings. .
At the races, they used to install magnets around the oil filter, to attract metal into the filter, and stay there. Then they take apart their filters when they take the engine apart after a race. . They inspect for metal and anything else in the filter. .
Have fun camping!
Fred.
