Newbie purchase questions

Hi all,

This site is a wealth of information and have utilized it the past 6 months while doing research on which HTT my family should invest in. Finally have a few pennies saved and are about to make a purchase. We have our eyes on 2 used units that are available from nearby dealers. The first being a 2007 Jayco 23B and the other being a 2007 KZ Coyote CFK.

I think the 23B has a slightly better reputation and I know a lot on here have and like this unit. Having the 3rd bed really makes the KZ appealing to us because we have 4 kids (ages 2-5) and can grow into that one without sleeping on the dinette everynight. I personally think we will be happy with either one.

My main questions have to do with what to exactly pay extra attention to when looking at used models? I have heard over and over again to inspect thoroughly when buying used....anyone have a checklist or a guide? I imagine having a salesman breathing down your neck will make this difficult. My background is in boats and e are tent campers so have no clue what things should or should not look like.

I read on on old post about paying 150 bucks for a professional independent inspector give it a looking over ......thoughts? I imagine I will make sure I get a 90 warranty to make sure all is 100% in good working order after a use or two.

Thanks in advance for helping this clueless boat captain make a sound purchase.
  • I think the biggest changes over the early models is the change from poles to cables for the bunk door suspension, and the improvements in gaskets and hinges. Early models also commonly had smaller then normal queen size beds, last I looked most were a full 60x80 as opposed to 54x75 or some such.

I believe the emergency disconnect brake has changed to a self contained unit as opposed to the older ones that required the trailer 12v battery to operate.
  • I noticed keyed hinges over the years. I initially liked it before I started looking deeper and deeper at axles, carrying capacity, and ride height. I was flip flopping over a glamper pup, or 23b.
I went with the new pup (flagstaff 625D) since it had nicer beds, and believe it or not: higher CCC.
I searched and searched for bh hybrids with the ability to turtle in the winter, and found the skinned cat starcraft travelstar sport 21 rbh.

One thing that the misses and I go back and forth on is whether to bite the bullet and buy a new trailer. We want to keep this thing for a long time. I imagine that with canvas there is more potential water leakage as they get older compared to a TT. Other than that are there any innovations/amenities on 2014 models compared to 2006-2010 models?

I am really tripping out on prices......Rockwood Roo 233s in So Cal is 30k and same trailer in the midwest is listed at 18-22k. I road trip might be worth it to save 5-8k.

people just don't get how prices are so high out west.
we went through the same issues looking for a good used hybrid out here, rare and overpriced.
prices for new ones were insane.
So we drove to Chicago and back to save a lot of money, for our new Roo 23SS.

Seriosly...WTH??? Bad enough we get taxed to death.......So you feel it was worth it to drive to the midwest? Would you do it again?

I found a dealer in No Cal (Turlock) that has is at a fair price, only 1.5k higher than RVW quoted me.

    mark

I was going to make some snarky remark comparing CA taxes to NY's, but decided against it and now I can't work out how to delete this thing...sorry!
  • Haha....New York only state worse than CA in taxes.....but at least you aren't getting taken to the cleaners on trailer prices :)

    Let me guess, Best RV.
Suggest you do some research on them, on forums like this one.
We shopped there once and would rather drive to the Midwest, than buy from them.
And they have a terrible after-the-sale rep.

i would go with a 3 bed unit.
23b is an infamous model we often badtalk about. Most common responses: 1: low clearance 2: low payload 3: climbing over a u dinette.
Imagine kids sleeping on the u, you have to climb over spouse, jump between kids, all while having to pee like a race horse. That will get old quick.

We just traded our 2010 Jayco 23B for a TT. One reason was an additional child and not wanting to squish into the sleeping arrangements.

I will not bad mouth the Jayco, as it never caused us many issues and it maintained a great resale value. It was also a very comfortable camper with a lot of features. That being said, I would not want to hop over any kids sleeping in the dinette in the middle of the night.

Good luck in your decision and happy camping!

WOW- Thank you for that! A simply Yelp search scared the hell out of me......no thanks.....will move on from that place, which is also where the 23b is that I almost drove 5 hours to see. After looking at all the reviews, there is about a 75% chance that the trailer isnt even there. Wow....thanks again
