Newbie question: Truck camper insurance

Howdy all, I just joined the forums and have a question about insuring a truck camper. I've owned RVs before but never a TC. However, I'm about to buy a used one.

I've read that some auto policies automatically include insurance coverage for a truck camper. Is this true, is it adequate, and is it only in some states or all?

If you hold separate insurance on your TC, can you recommend a company?

Also, does anyone NOT hold insurance on their TC? Just wondering as in most states they do not require a separate vehicle license, so, presumably, insurance would not be required by law.

Thanks in advance!
  • My TC is separately insured by Erie. If I remember correctly they told me that even when on the truck it wasn't fully covered. Either way, off the truck, like sitting in a campground, it needs it's own insurance. The cost is minimal. I think mine is only about $125 per year.
  • I bought a small policy to cover mine on and off the truck. I think it amounted to around $150 per year. Not too bad I don't think.
  • I would recommend that you do a search on "truck camper insurance" to see what others have found out ab out truck camper insurance.
  • I called my insurer and asked then added additional coverage for when it's off the truck and on. Policy was updated and coverage doc's we emailed. you can never be too safe as insurance companys are in the business of making money not giving it away.
  • And for anyone to everyone that says that it is, get it in writing. This is a highly debated topic and opinion is rich on the interprutation of which policies cover what.
  • Our truck camper is covered by the truck when insurance when it is on the truck but you need to see if your home owners insurance or some other insurance will cover it when it is not on the truck.
