If you aren't dry camping for more than a long weekend at a time, you should be able to last on two batteries if you keep the light usage low. We do it all the time. We have a 300 watt inverter we use for the tv and laptop to watch movies. We heat up our water on the stove and pour it into our drip coffee maker. The only time it is a problem is when we have to use the furnace.
Before spending $1K on a generator, try dry camping for a couple of nights and see how you do.
