Does anyone think this is an overloaded truck?
After towing a 15000lb 5th wheel with a 1986 Chevy 1 ton, rated to tow 10,000lbs. Towing through deserts at 80 plus heat, 10% grades and at 5000 foot altitude the only time this truck overheated was due to some mechanical problem (bad fan clutches twice, stuck thermostat, cracked radiator...etc) When it had no problems, it would tow up long 10% grades (21 miles) in first gear without going above 220°.
I believe most trucks can tow way above the rated weights....
Safely probably not
At a reduce service life probably
But they will do it.
I don't condone it, I've done it and that's why I now have a truck rated at 26,000lbs to tow my 15,000lb 5th wheel. It's a lot safer and keeps me from getting white knuckles going down hill.
