The sound from the fan is unmistakable, if you didn't hear anything other than the engine I would bet the clutch on the fan is toast.. One other thing, the water pumps on the Dmax have the drive gear and impeller pressed onto a shaft, these have been known to slip and reduce the flow of coolant. Most people if they know about this have the gear and impeller tack welded on when replacing the water pump. I would still be leaning towards the fan though.
