One time I drove from Fresno California to Portland Oregon during summer pulling our trailer all the way at night. I worked 3rd shift then (I am now retired) so I was used to staying up all night. I enjoyed it but now that i think about it not sure if I would do it again. Yes it was cooler and quieter (DW and kids wee sleeping) less traffic too. Have any of you driven at night and what are your thoughts and experiences about it?

I used to that as well but as age creeps up on you I am really glad to get off the road before dark and get setup somewhere.Much more enjoyable to me to listen to the nature night sounds then the clap clap of the long road haha...We don't go as far these days as we used to also... Was only a RV TRAVELER for a short time. Now we would rather camp off-road somewhere back on a creek bed stream and live some with the nature night sounds... This is what we call RV CAMPING... haha...Also can't see as well as I did back in those days...Roy Ken

I've driven cars, ridden motorcycles, and driven various tow vehicles, day, night in all kinds of weather.These days, I'm retired with ( mostly ) no schedule to keep, so I limit my road miles to daytime only as much as I can. My biggest concerns at night is increased animal activity ( deer, etc ) and the simple fact there are more drunk drivers on the road at night.

When our kids were small we did all of our driving at night while they slept and spent the day enjoying wherever we were. Both DW and I share the driving so we both still got a decent amount of sleep and worked in naps poolside, at the park.... Whatever. Now that we are empty nesters in our fifties we we drove during the night only to get through major cities and high traffic areas avoiding the "rush hours". We can zip through from 10:pm to 5:am what would take hours of bumper to bumper traffic during the weekdays.

When I'm towing, I'd rather have all the advantages I can get - including driving during the daylight. If I'm looking for driving when it's cooler, I'd rather leave at 5am and be done driving before noon.

When we are young we think we are invincible so yes towing at night was no big thing in our minds.Now that I am older I prefer not to tow at night. It's just not safe. Sure there is usually less traffic. The main problem is changing lanes. Lights in the mirror can play tricks...is there a vehicle next to me or not. It's tough to see curbs, overhanging branches, holes, road defect or other obstacles.I try to tow from first light to beat the traffic and then stop around 3PM to setup camp for the night.

I find it difficult to stay awake during daylight now much less at night. I enjoy the journey but do not like driving.

I drive at night many times. Due to the light traffic you could even argue it is safer. It certainly is less stressful.

In two weeks I'll be doing an all nighter to Florida from Ohio.

Been retired for 12 yrs and still find myself on 'nightshift'

x2 all around.

If I have to negotiate a large populated city, I start out a 3 A.M. before the trucks get rolling.
Unless it's really windy, then I go back to sleep. Otherwise,I leave whenever and get there whenever.
Got rid of my watch 12 yrs. ago . Funny thing is, the watch was a retirement gift . :)
