We had the same problem with an older (1966) trailer. Use a very heavy, short extension cord.
Ours would do the exact same thing as you described. I would not make a decision until you plug the trailer into a regular campground 30 amp pedestal.
Evidently our 15 amp house current did not have enough to start the compressor. It ran fine in the campground.
