If you have time to load up I can see having the fridge full and on, I also like my food, but many times I do not have the time to get steaks, eggs, bread, etc, etc.
When I find out at 3pm that I am suppose to be on the road in a couple minutes to chase a storm system I just do not have the time to load up and some times I don't know till late at night if I will make it home that day or the next.
One time I was packing for a wedding at 9am on a Saturday, it was out of town and was suppose to be a one day event (down in the am, shoot and back home by dark) and at the last minute I got a call asking of I could photograph the reception (long story why last minute). Well the van had all my gear in it as I was just about to pull out of the driveway, so I grabbed the gear from the van tossed into the truck camper and was on the road in minutes. For me it was the benefit of having my house with me and I could now spend an extra day in a mountain area (had shelter, clothes and some dried food) and not having to drive back home at night, the drawback was that as I rushed to hit the road I had nothing to drink in the TCer or time to load up (okay had a couple pop but that was it). Now with some tetra packs in the camper with soy and orange juice I have enough for a couple days if I should need it.
I have thought of a compressor fridge and if I was still shooting film would have one as a film storage area and also for drinks and food :B.
Ice does not work as again it would involve knowing ahead of time or having the time to get it, then it is also cleaning up as it is messier than just turning the fridge on. Would rather have the fridge on than use ice.
Thanks for the costs on keeping the fridge on, I do think I will get the fridge running as storm season hits and keep going for a month or so. I also like my cold drinks so will have them in the fridge, but will stay away from food in it as don't want to be on the road with another vehicle when the camper runs out of propane at home :M
