Check out Thrive Foods.
All freeze dried, very lightweight.
Tons of variety to choose from. Meats, veggies, fruits, seasonings, plus pre made entrees, meals, and drinks.
I have a family member that is a distributer and the stuff tastes great.
It has a 25 year shelf life if unopened. 5 years if opened.
I may be wrong, but I think military MRE's are engineered for high calorie and made so a soldier doesn't have to defecate until he/she chews the gum which contains a laxative.
Makes for one mean ass soldier!!
AFIAK, MREs are designed for combat use and part of the design is not having to use the bathroom as often. Also, true MREs are not sold to the public. They get printed that they are property of the US government and are never sold in stores.
Instead, there are civilian MRE companies like Sopakco and more (mreinfo.com seems to have a good primer on this.)
Can't believe I forgot about this, because I keep a food stash in my current RV that are foods made to be stored at room temperature without refrigeration. JMHO, having a food stash like the above (doesn't have to be MREs specifically, but packaged meals that don't have to be stored cold... as well as bottled water) is a wise thing to have for long trips, especially boondocking. An extension to the "bug out bag" concept, basically.
