Large box fans are great to keep the area relatively free, but since you were in non-electric sites, I can only suggest something like the Thermacell insect repellent products. They run off of batteries so work well in an off-grid situation. I borrowed some and thought they did the job with mosquitoes and supposed work for no see-ums, per the company.
