Noisy gmc 2500hd in 4 hi

So I put my 2018 in 4 wheel drive for the first time today as it was snowing heavy. The thing was whining and noisy like I’ve never heard before. It sounded like I was driving a diesel. I had a 2017 truck too in the exact same model that was no where near this loud. In fact, I could not even hear the difference between being in 4wd or 2wd. There is no mistaking it in this 2018. I did some searching on the net and came across a service bulletin about a noisy transfer case that they claim is normal. But I don’t understand why the 2017 would be so quiet and this one so noisy? I’ll probably call dealer tomorrow and see what they have to say. Anyone else here experiencing this noise?
  • Some thing is not right. I have been driving both an '18 3500 and '19 3500 in 4X4 (that time of the year here) and both of these are quiet. My '15 3500 was also quiet. I would also say check the fluid in transfer case and the front axle and I wouldn't wait too long doing it.
  • I’ve had 2004, 2011, 2017, and 2018 2500 HD trucks and this one is way noisier than any of the others.
  • Time to check the transfer case oil level. That's the first thing I'd do.

I've been driving various GM 4x4s with the IFS / central axle disconnect system since 1989 (S-10 Blazer). They do make a slight bit of hum/gear whine when in 4WD (like most 4z4s do) but they shouldn't be as noisy as what you are describing.
