I've learned to start the downhill at a very conservative speed. You can speed up in necessary and prudent.
Also, extra weight becomes an issue when descending or ascending a steep grade. If you're concerned, dump the gray, black, and some of the fresh water. I'm not saying the beer has to go, maybe the kids and wife, but not the beer.
