The way you went to Burnsville is basically the only way to go unless you want to take a long detour.
I live in Bakersville, in Mitchell County and have gone up and down Cox creek mountain, (226) pulling our 5000 pound trailer with my Ford F-150 quite a few times.
Coming up I just keep it in D-2 and I always can maintain 35 MPH. going down I put it in D-2 at the top, and then as soon as the RPM's go high, I touch the trailer brakes to slow it down. I usually only have to touch them at a few of the sharper curves.
Coming down when I am not towing, I keep it in D-2 and just tap the truck brakes a few times if I start to go too fast.
It just amazes me to see some of the locals who should know better coming down all the way with their brake lights on. When I am behind them I can smell their brakes when they are only half way down.
As much as we use our GPS, you still have to watch out. People who are coming to our house from Asheville are directed to take Mulberry Lane off 226. It is an old dirt one track logging road, that is gaited in several places.
