Thanks guys, I do have the tow/haul and use it. I try to stay away from secondary roads but like terryallen said, it is tough to avoid to get to some campgrounds. I don't think a paper map even tells you the grades either. I studied the route on google maps really well or I had thought. I have confidence I could have made it down the 14% grade, in first gear going 10mph.
The grade on 421 out of boone is just west of north Wilkesboro and is pretty much straight down with no real curves. I have started gearing down the Yukon even without the trailer.
My wife and I did the grade on 19 in a 02 sentra and about half way down she asked me if her brakes were smoking and I said, no someone must be burning something, I didn't have the heart to tell her. Coming from Chicago I never knew how to gear down or when to do it. But now looking back we were dumb cause it is common sense.
I agree, I will try the start very conservately route then upshift when comfortable.
