NorthStar hard side owners- What would you change?

Narrowing down to a short list of manufactures for our first TC.

After reading here about the willingness and flexibility of NorthStar in customizing their campers...

I am wondering what modifications you had NS perform or what you would have them do if you purchased another TC from them?

We really appreciate any input.
Thanks.

  • We had them install large windows in the overhead. When we bought ours the stock windows for our model were very tiny. I also eliminated the cabinet in the bathroom. Love the cassette toilet and the insulated windows.

My next Northstar will not have the front "pass through" window. That's about as useless an item there is plus it's single pane. Ice and condensation can be an issue in cold weather with that window.

I would also like some type of ventilation in the bathroom. Either a powered vent in the roof or one of the small windows on the side where the bathroom cabinet would have been. One of the guys who was working on my camper said they could do either but not after it's built because there is no framing for it in the wall.

And as has been said before you cannot beat the customer service at Northstar.

  • I don't like that bathroom type window that is in the door.

You cannot see out of it and you have to add black out material for night..
Maybe it is there to let some light in during the daytime hours..

Get them to put an inspection/deck hatch in your water tank, you would not believe how slimy and dirty the tank gets in a short period of time until you look inside with a flashlight. It is also good for dumping in water if you are boondocking.

I would not order the Heiki Hatch unless they are greatly improved in quality now.

We like the cassette toilet, no dump stations...

I would not change the service from the manufacturer.
They usually get back to you within a few hours on anything you call about. It is really quite amazing.
  • I bought a Laredo that had very few options. Other than standard upgrades, like insulated windows, I would not change much. If were custom ordering, I would request a bigger battery box (a group 24 barley fits in mine). I would also like a bigger compartment and door in the shortbed "wing" to accommodate a Honda 2000.
  • Doug-
That is a sharp TC. I really like what you did and the flat bed idea.
Yes, we had thought about the Midwest rally but we have conflicts that week.
I toured the factory last October. Rex was very helpful.
Kind of leaning toward the 9.5 model.

  • added outside storage boxes to an Arrow 8.5 then it sets on my flatbed truck.

Another thing led lights on the inside are nice very bright and save on energy, but they are too BRIGHT I would recommend 2 in the main dinning area, and bathroom otherwise see if they can make the rest the old bulb.

We put a convection oven in place of microwave and swapped out the oven for more drawers.

I see your from Ohio, I'm the Wagon Master and Organizer for the MidWest Truck Camper Rally. Have you seen the post? We are the rally this summer at the Amana Colonies in Amana, Iowa. We are all taking a tour of the NorthStar Truck Camper factory. I encourage you to look into the rally its a lot of fun. Last year we had 21 rigs from all over the U.S. show up this year as of today we have 23 rigs signed up. Look for the post on Woodalls if you can find it. It keeps getting put to the back. Or go to my blog to check out more.

Rex is who we worked with. Great Guy They are very flexible and they make sure your happy.

Another thing I'm not please with Happy Jack stands. I have the electric ones. We went through two motors in the first 12 months. Rex was great about it. He sent me the new ones and I sent him the old ones. Ask if they could put in recio titans. They seem better to me. I doubt they will do that but doesn't hurt to ask.

Good Luck. Which one you looking at. We have the Arrow 8.5 with side dinette. That model seemed bigger inside than the rear dinette, more open feeling.
