Northstar pop-top question.

Hello all,

I recently purchased a 2005 Northstar 850SC. There are eye bolts behind each of the rear tie down points (see pic.) I want to use the eye bolts as an attach point for my rear Happijac turn buckles but I want to make sure it is OK. No help from the manufacture or dealers. The manufacture needs to see the camper to give an answer and dealers don't give an opinion because of liability concerns. Any insights appreciated.

PS - Realized I'm not clear on how to post a pic. Will figure it out and post.

  • I would not use them as tie downs unless it could be verified that some kind of reinforcement to structure was also added. Which, because it appears there pretty close to outside edge, I cant see that might have been done unless camper had been opened up. Can you see any of the thread? If its a lag screw simply threaded into frame I wouldnt use for more than keeping cords off the ground.

You would also lose pull angle even if structurally able to withstand
camper movement. Which you mentioned shorter distance...if it is just a matter of using turnbuckles you have that are too short, simply add a few links of chain, or replace threaded rod with a longer piece of all thread to extend.

The trim being cut and difference in caulk raises questions. Eyebolt looks pretty shiny?
  • North Star has a reputation for excellent customer service so, I imagine they don't want to comment on this issue due to the fact that they didn't install it. I wouldn't use it unless I knew what was behind it and that it would handle the strain.
  • I have the same camper. The eyebolts are not original equipment and I would not feel comfortable that they would provide the same level of attachment.
  • No. I have the same camper. The white piece next to it is the tie down point.
  • I wouldn't trust them. Original owner may have just put them there to hold something light i.e. fishing pole tube. What's wrong with the factory hold downs?
  • I can't think of any other reason the PO would have installed them, other than for a tie down point. My camper has them on the side with only one jack (3 jack setup) and I use them. Look them over carefully first to ensure their strength.
  • I have an 650 and a Laredo and I doubt that the eye bolts would be beefed up around the area they are in. They would probably not hold up to the stress like the factory mount plate. There must be some reason you don't want to use the factory tie down plate.
