not rv but boat?

I do exactly what you describe. I have a 20' boat weighs in at 4500#s with a half a tank of gas. A few times a year my wife pulls it behind her Tahoe, while I pull the TT behind my truck. Tahoe is an 2003 with the 5.3 and pulls it pretty good. We learned that we only bring boat and camper together a few times a year bc it gets really expensive and a lot of work when you bring both the TT the boat and two tow vehicles. Lots of prep work involved there!
And at least where we live/boat, 4x4 is not necessary on boat ramps if you have common sense. I pull the boat with my 2wd truck with no problems. I spray my trailer bunks with a spray made for the boat to slide right on and come right off, which makes loading/unloading much easier with 2wd.
Next time we upgrade the Tahoe we will probably look for something with the v6 for better fuel economy for all the running around she does throughout the year.

If you're needing a SUV and you're going to tow 5000 lbs. or slightly more, you're just about needing something with a live rear axle. That means the Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango or the ForeRunner.

You can easily find good late model Grand Cherokees on the used car market. That's what I'd prefer.

Thanks for all the replies. I think for the few times it will get pulled by the SUV the v6 will be fine. Most of the time the Cummins will be the tow vehicle.

I think you would be fine with a 4Runner or something similar. While we would pack a lot of gear in the boat, weight wise it isn't huge. The boat looks sweet, I would love to have one!

Why do you think you would need a V8 or Ecoboost to pull that boat. You can get a 6200# tow capacity with a V6 Jeep Grand Cherokee. You can get a well equipped 4X4 in the low to mid 30's. 290 hp with the 8 speed trans will drag that boat all day with no problems.

That would be fantastic. I will have to check that out because I know as of now its only available in the Sport model. If Im spending 45k on another vehicle Im buying a twin to my truck, not an Explorer

I believe the new for 2015 Ford Expedition is offered only with the 3.5 EcoBoost. That may be just the rig you are looking for. I believe they hit lots in a few months.

Looking at that boat and the weight with trailer I would say just about any mid size sport ute with a V6 can tow that boat.

The Bride and I are thinking exactly like you, 4 Runner to tow our Ski Nautique. Were currently between RV's but have the F350 for that. Seems to be the perfect size to live with day in and out. The Yamaha looks like fun, 2900 and change on the trailer should give you plenty of breathing space on the tow capacity. Like everything it also depends on how many people etc. you want to put in the vehicle with the trailer on the back.
