The "auto-shift" is a regular 10 speed manual transmission that has been equipped with a computer controlled shifter, this is what is known as a "three pedal" transmission, in that there is a throttle pedal, clutch pedal and brake pedal.
At 65 mph what rpm's are you turning and does the auto/manual trans auto shift for up hills or do you need to move a switch on the shifter to get an up or down shift w/o the clutch? For example, does it have a computer that skips shifts going up if the need is not there to use every gear? Or is the driver still the computer for shifting and when to shift?
The "shifter" on my truck looks more like a turn signal lever thats mounted on the right side of the steering column. It has a small switch that can be moved into any one of four positions. At the top is REVERSE, next down is NEUTRAL, next down is DRIVE, below that LOW.
In normal driving push in the clutch, put the selector switch in either REVERSE or DRIVE depending on which direction you want to move in, let the clutch out and the truck moves as any normal truck will do. Depending on load the truck will start out in 1st gear or 2nd and will then up shift or down shift by itself as needed depending on road speed and load. The LOW position can be selected at ANY speed this is usually used when going down a grade and you want to lock the transmission into gear as it may up shift when the computer senses the load has lessened. For example your going down a grade in 8th gear using the Jake and you DON'T want the transmission to up shift as it will sense there not much of a load on the engine, when in the gear that YOU want to hold, move the selector switch to LOW and it will lock the transmission in that gear.
"IF" the driver wants to, he can slide the "manual-auto" switch that is located on the stalk of the shifter into MANUAL. When in MANUAL, use the clutch to start from or come to a full stop, then push the shifter down to down shift or pull it up to up shift, the transmission will NOT shift when in MANUAL unless the driver pushes or pulls the shift lever. At 65 mph, in 10th gear the engine is turning 1,350 rpm.
If I did it right this should be a video that shows how this type of transmission works. The shifter itself in this video is made up of a panel with buttons, the shifter on my truck is a small lever on the right side of the steering column.
