Thanks Mr. Cob & hone eagle -
I've been looking at the class 8 tractor option. Right now (still employed) we do most of our RV travel miles in Jan/Feb on I-15.
What are your thoughts about traction in less than ideal conditions?
When you are loaded and hooked up ready for the road what weight are you carrying on your tractor's drive axle?
Any reason a guy couldn't single the rear axle to increase traction on snow and ice? Single rear (winter) tires would be good to carry up to 12,000 - 13,000lbs same as the steer axle...
I will defer to those who have better knowledge of this then I do, as I have yet to use my HDT in a poor traction situation. The fellow who built the rear deck on my truck in my opinion made a major mistake in that the wheel wells are very close to the tires, so close it is impossible to fit chains to the tires. I have looked closely at the deck on my truck and can't see anyway without costly modification that this potential problem can be resolved.
There is a product out that is recognized by many States as an approved traction device that may work in my application as it takes up very little room and is easy to fit to the tires. However this product CAN NOT be used on clear or dry surfaces as it is made from a fabric it is not a metal chain. Click this link for more information on this traction product.

Heres a video of the tire sock being used.

I have given serious thought to buying a pair of these tire socks for the occasional times when I may need them. I live in and cross a lot of mountains but I chose NOT to travel when I know the roads are going to be covered in snow and ice, these tire socks should work for the few times I may be caught on the road during a storm or need to get over a pass to better road conditions.
If anyone has real world experience with this product PLEASE post up your opinion of it. THANKS.
Dave
