My toy hauler loaded is around 18,000 pounds. I haven't and don't plan to use the HDT to camp in some of the places I did with the Dodge, the HDT weights 16,600 pounds, much of that on the front axle so its NOT the type of truck you want to go booni-boppin with.
I have to say one thing, you state that your HDT is not working hard doing it's job and you're absolutely correct...18,000# isn't hardly any weight for one of these trucks to tow. I wouldn't hesitate to tow an 18,000# 5er even with my truck and would still be within all my weights and would still feel 100% safe in doing so, it would put me at about a total weight of 27,500#, which, in reality, isn't that big of a deal to my truck either. As far as mpg, guess you probably have me there, best I do empty has been 17 mpg on a trip, and this truck is also my daily driver...towing I'm usually around 9.1-11 depending on which mountains we're towing in. As far as comfort, definitely no air ride, but towing for 8-9 hrs a day isn't the least bit tiring, but I guess it depends on how hard one drives....These seats are very comfortable, heated and cooling fans to circulate cool air when it's hot.....and far too many "extra's" to get into, but definitely driving in the "lap of luxury" for it to be a 1 ton crew cab, long bed 4X4 dually..
As far as the truck you were towing with before, I have no idea what you did to an 03' Dodge Dually to handle the weight you were towing with it, but I can understand why it probably didn't tow or ride very well, I imagine you were pushing it to it's limits. Just my opinion and not worth much at that.
I congratulate you on your HDT and we can easily state that you have "more than enough truck" to tow the weight you're towing...Most 2012-2014 1 ton dually's out there today could safely and comfortably tow the 18,000# weight you're towing with your HDT. Guess you would have had to tow with one of the brand new one's to understand it.
