In addition to the above, the fuel air mixture can per-ignite (explode) on its own regardless of ignition timing. Some may have experienced carburetor fed engines years ago that wouldn't stop after turning off the ignition. Today to tame per-ignition, timing and quantity of the fuel being injected would need to be altered. With those adjustments going on in the background, power and efficiency needs to take a back seat to engine self-preservation.
