It is recommended but not required. As long as it meets the SAE guidelines you can use synthetic or dino oil without voiding your warranty.
As for the dipstick it stated in the owners manual that if you are in the cross hatch area you are good. If you are below the cross hatch at a quart. All of this is in your owners manual people, take the time to look it up if you are not 100% certain.
