Ignorance is bliss I guess. With what both Toyota and GM got caught doing (or rather not doing), do you seriously believe that Dodge, Ford, and everyone else have been totally upfront with the public on safety issues? They've all been hiding stuff. GM and Toyota got caught first.
GMs recall frenzy is due to a govmt appointed nanny watching over them. As a result of that they have created a separate internal auditing group to ferret out safety issues, even rewarding employees for finding problems.
In the long run this is a good thing. It's going to force the entire industry to do better self policing in this area rather than have more regulation passed. Expect other manufacturers to follow suit in the next 12-18 months.
