Ok what truck to buy ?

After several struggles in the mountains I've decided it's time for a new truck.
My old truck has been really good but new trailer is pushing it.

Current truck is 2004 Ram 2500 5.7 Hemi pulling 8K trailer, struggling mightily on the big hills with a bunch of junk in the bed.

I'm going new here but stuck on the 6.4 Dodge or the 7.3 Ford.

I'm a gas mechanic so no diesel please....yeah I know.

6.4 or 7.3 ?

I can't believe you're a mechanic and yet want forum members to help you decide between a 6.4 6 speed and a 7.3 10 speed. How much money would you save buying the Ram? How important is it to you to save money? You certainly don't need the 7.3 Ford to tow a 7k lb trailer but if you can easily afford the blue oval why would you even consider the Ram.

    Well then, there's that. Lol

I see these posts all the time so figured why not.

Not arguing that 7.3 push rod engine with 10 gears isn't appealing, just buying time till I decide.

  • Thanks and admit, like the looks of the new Silverados. Will look at the 6.6 also.

My struggles will likely disappear with any new offerings in 2500.
  • I’m a GM guy, but that Ford 7.3 with the 10 speed and 4.30 gears look like an awesome combination. I am also not a fan of that cylinder deactivation on the Ram, more things to go wrong.
  • I can't speak about the 7.3 Ford but I have a 2017 Ram with the 6.4 Hemi (6 Speed). I've had no issues with it. You won't have any problems towing your 8K trailer at all. This past winter, I towed our previous fifth wheel that weighed close to 10K loaded to Florida and back from Western NY. My only complaint and it's a minor one is it only has a 31 gallon tank so there's more frequent stops to fill up. They need to up the gas tank size some.
