I always ask for, and get, tires no older than 6 months per DOT code. Is it necessary? No idea, but we've put over 200,000 miles on various non-Chinese ST tires and only issues have been a few repairable nail punctures. It seems to work for us.
Note I read the reason the DOT code is now four numbers, is some places were holding tires TEN YEARS so they could be sold as new. With the three digit code used until 2000 there was no way to tell!
