In earlier days, the Truck Camper Onan had a real muffler and ran much quieter.
For some reason, Onan changed the model and installed a "spark arrestor" which virtually eliminated the muffler. AND made it much louder.
If you look at the current Onan model exhaust port you can see a small tin can attached which is the spark arrestor/muffler. The real muffler kit is still sold for the OLDER model Onans.
Installing the muffler kit on the newer model Onan's could produce back pressure according to my sources and is not recommended.
Last year I had a conversation with an independent Onan repair tech who inferred that Onan is about to make another model change (for the small 2500 watt genny) that will run quieter.
Time will tell.
