Open Range 331bhs vs Sunset Trail 33BD vs Cougar 32RBK

Last night I posted about an Open Range 331bhs which I think has a lot go bang for its buck! But the two others campers considering are the Sunset Trail 33BD and the Cougar 32rbk. The Open Range and a Sunset Trail are both 50 amp with 2 ac on them or can have. Close to th same price! The Cougar is about $4000 dollars cheaper but nice but not as nice? Needing others thoughts soon talking to dealer this week! All of them work for us! Open Range has best warranty!

  • I have no dog in this fight, but have sold both Cougars and Open Ranges. All exterior surfaces of the Open Range are laminated. Bang on them with open hand to feel. Slide out ends and back wall. Have seen lots of 2 year old Cougars/Laredos/Sprinters/Outbacks with sagging rear exterior walls (not laminated).

Cougars use OSB roof and floor. Open range uses plywood. I would guess floor is thicker in cougar, but not sure. Warranties are different. Also, decals on the keystone products shrivel up like no other.

Having said all of that, I would own either.

Not that familiar with Sunset Trail other than seeing a fifth wheel once with a front cap slide.
  • We have a 2012 Sunset Trail and have had no problems with it.

To the OP my vote is for the Open Range but I'm biased!
All others factors a side 2 year warranty is a major difference........

Why would someone want to advertise a product they hate and would never buy again??
    Beyond me...

I hear you but in the posters case he's giving negative publicity.
I guess the signature picture can be considered advertisement. I posted the picture of the rig that I own. I am showing the forum members my rig but I am not marketing, suggesting or hoping anyone else purchases an Open Range.
  • All manufacturers produce lemons occasionally. Like I said before, I have had experience with many types of RVs and manufacturers. We have been very happy with our Open Range and I do like having a 2 year warranty just in case it is needed. We chose it because the floorplan works for us and the fit and finish was far better than we were seeing in other brands. Our second choice would have been a Jayco but the Open Range had quite a bit more storage and we plan to use it either as snowbirds or full time starting in the next year or two.

I own a Cougar FW, and I'll never recommend one to anyone. Piece of junk from day one. It spent the first nine weeks in the shop for major repairs. It usually costs me $200 to $500 in repairs every time I take it out. From landing gear failures, slide failures, electrical failures, suspension failures, fiberglass problems, etc. I'll never buy another Keystone product.

If you hate Cougar's so much may I suggest you take down the photo you post in your signature?
Sorry to hear of your problems.
We love out Keystone Cougar High Country.

  • Bought a new 2013 Cougar 31SQB in January and have had nothing but fun with it. Works like it should and no hassle.

Sorry to hear about the problems! We owned a 2005 cougar for about 7 years and hardly ever had problems! But I am leaning towards the Open Range! Just want to make the right choice!
