Open Range opinions

I have a 2012 399BHS. No major issues thus far. Couple of minor repairs needed that I completed myself.

Carrier stopped making rv units several years ago and OR bought the remaining inventory. New units are actually old stock.

Ours is 3-1/2 years old. Across country twice, down to Florida and lots of local trips. Our heat pump died which we had to replace since it was out of warranty. Had a couple of electrical splice connector problems that we have diagnosed and fixed but considering the miles on this camper we have been happy. Will probably buy an OR fifth wheel when we get closer to retirement.

Maybe mine was built on Monday morning after the Super Bowl! That could explain the problems.

We have a 399 bhs that we bought new in 2008.We have been very pleased and have had only minor maintenance issues. Some of the things we thought should be improved have been on newer models.
As a previous post said the cable system can be problematic but if you are handy you can get everything you need to make a temporary repair at any home center or Walmart. That can't be said for a hydraulic system.

I have an Open Range 2011 Journeyer 337rls travel trailer. I bought my Open Range new in April 2011. It is the 6th trailer/fifth wheel that I have purchased and all 6 were purchased new. It has been back to the dealer approximately 12-14 times, at least double my previous 5 campers combined. I had to have both original Carrier heat pumps replaced with new carrier heat pumps. My dealer told me that the Carriers were 2007 models on my 2011 trailer. The plumbing has been a nightmare. There was/is not enough support under the shower and the shower drain to the gray tank has broken twice and flooded the enclosed under belly twice. Then as a result of the shower drain breaking it created an overstress situation on one of the fresh water lines under the shower and it pulled loose and flooded the enclosed underbelly a third time. I finished peeling the decals off the back of the trailer today and the front decals need removing also. I have been careful to only use a marine wax with no petroleum products in it. The large swoosh stripes on the sides are still like new.
I am very careful about keeping the sealant in good condition on the sides and on the roof. I now have a small delamination spot above my hot water heater. The dealer contacted Open Range about the delamination and they asked had I been doing a yearly inspection and keeping all sealant in good condition?, yes I have. You can also see the outline of the wall framing through the siding. My dealer contacted Open Range and they said that this is normal and it is called telegraphing, I think the siding is too thin and I am waiting for problems there in the future.
The only other problem which I repaired myself is that the back half of the awning where the fabric attaches to the siding pulled loose right after I purchased the camper. I repaired this myself. What happened is the back half of the awning where the fabric attaches was only secured with small screws that were only in the fiberglass siding. The front part of the awning fabric was actually secured to metal underneath and secured good.
My dealer has been outstanding and has even performed some work for me since the warranty expired as a goodwill right off because I have had so much trouble with this Open Range, and it is the 2nd camper that I have purchased from them, the first being a Jayco.
The gas cover for the propane tanks on the tongue has fallen apart, I have never had this happen before, My dealer says that all of Open Range propane covers fall apart.
I really like the layout of our Open Range, would I buy another Open Range, no. I think my 7th camper will probably be a Lance.

You can not compare the OR and Sunnybrook....totally different class. For the extra money you are getting a better built, finished and equipted TT. That being said after seeing the OR being built and the fact that they are using the BAL cable slides I would never buy one. This cable system has been around since the early 90,s...was a headache then and not much better today. Its used because its cheaper and lighter but not for better reliability. As for the roofing...the material is in the TPO family...lasts longer...much less black streaks...can easily be cleaned where you should never clean a rubber (EPDM) roof as it shortens the life of the membrane (ever see an office building roof getting scrubbed and treated???) JMHO

We love our Open Range. My DW retired as of TODAY so we will be using it a lot more now. We have only had one problem, a bad propane regulator, which OR replaced promptly. No other problems but it is an RV so I know that problems will occur. I like having a two year warranty and the build quality is second to none in my opinion. This is only my second RV (had a Rockwood Roo hybrid before the OR) but my family has had many RV's from TC to Class A and C motorhomes so I have had a lot of experience with many different brands and models.

Sharp unit and floorplan, plus a two year warranty is a definite plus allowing plenty of time to remedy any issues that may pop up. Only negative for me is 1000 pound CCC as seen on this dealer's website. Not a big deal if you don't over pack and travel with mostly empty tanks. No manufacturer builds a perfect defect-free RV and most don't back their units with a two year warranty. Find a quality, service-oriented dealer and you should be good to go. Happy Camping!!!

As you can see, we have a different OR model. We bought it for the floor plan and it's 4 Season design. Some initial problems that were factory related but those were taken care of.
